Why Keep Stats?
"I do not believe in keeping statistics, and the only stat that
matters is the final score."
This was true at one time, mainly because their opponents were not keeping
and using statistics either! However, times have definitely changed. If you
currently don't believe in keeping and using statistics, you had better not
play the Pat Reily's, Phil Jackson's, Jeff VanGundy's or Mike Krzyewski's or
Lute Olsen's who are masters of game evaluation and preparation. The final
score is still paramount, however, how it is achieved is of the utmost
importance for future play.
In the past, basketball statistics were a luxury only available to
professional coaches and major college teams. For most part, just capturing
statistics was a nightmare requiring a lot of organization and training let
alone the time consuming efforts of totaling and figuring out the various
percentages with belated results at best. Computers have now made statistics
available to all programs on all levels.
Statistics can be anywhere from meaningless to a very valuable coaching aide.
Statistical information can be so overwhelming that most coaches ignore it.
This neglect is also a result of having belated access to only a box score
report. With a typical box score report, most time is spend trying to
read and figuring out who’s the leading scorers, rebounders, who’s in foul
trouble, etc., and when you do look at team totals like offensive and defensive
rebounds, they are very misleading.
We are now living in a world of information; however, to be of value this
information must be presented in a meaningful and useable manner. This is

What the Reports Tell
Statistics are only as good as your ability to interpret and implement them. It is
important to have the ability to see tendencies and "red flags."
Rebounding Statistics
"We out rebounded them 48 to 39."
First of all the number of Total Rebounds are of little value. In addition, since offensive and defensive rebounding
requires two entirely different approaches and skills, coaches must look at offensive and defensive rebounds performances
separately. To really analyze and evaluate the team's defensive rebounding performances coaches must look at the team's
rebounding percentages along with the points scored on second efforts. These figures are found on the game and season
(cumulative) box score, leaders, team goals, and graphical comparison reports.

Ball Handling Statistics
Like rebounding, the total number of tunovers can often times be misleading. For turnover statistics to be of value, the
number of offensive possessions must be considered along with the points allowed off the turnovers. In addition, coaches
should analyze the opponent's turnovers. Pertinent turnover information is found on the box score, leaders, team goals,
graphical comparison, and Lineup Combination reports.

Lineup Combination Analysis
The Lineup Combination report is an exciting tool to assist coaches in tracking and evaluating the effectiveness of
various lineups used during a game or season. For quick reference this report lists the top lineup in each of the
following categories: Most Often
Used Lineup; Most Productive Offensive Lineup; Most Productive Rebounding Lineup; Best Defensive Combination; Best
Lineup to Force Turnovers; Best Overall lineup; and Best Free Throw Shooting Line Up. For further analysis, the best 10
lineups are ranked in each category.
The lineups analysis reports are not only vital for a team's performance, but they are also valuable as a scouting tool.
Knowing the various lineups that your opponents are going to use is definitely a big advantage.
