Basic Concepts and Fundamentals With the NBA legalizing zone defenses, the need for a solid zone attack is now paramount on every level of the game. However, before under taking any specific offense, coaches and players must have a working knowledge of the basic principles and techniques required to successfully combat zone defenses. "Blue" Stack Zone Offense Stack or "Blue" is a very prolific zone offense based on the overload principle. In fact, it can be so effective that most teams will not zone against it. Although, stack alignments and overloads have been around for sometime, Mike Frink came up with this particular continuity. It is a simple to teach and easy to learn offense. Like all successful offenses, "Blue" incorporates precise spacing and movement. The stack alignment, immediately, creates match up and adjustment problems for any zone. Its basic continuity provides for specific player roles and responsibilities. Allowing players to do what they do best playing within their limitations. Shooters shoot and rebounders rebound. However, coaches do need to be cognizant of the areas on the court where open shots are occurring, and deploy their best shooters to those areas. Offensive rebounding is another major strength. On many of occassions, missed shots will actually end up being great passes for put backs. Offensive rebounding and second efforts are vital to the outcome of any game.
